Perspectives on Autumn 2026 Student Protests: Call for Contributions
The International Union of Scientists (IUS) joins parents, educators, unions and political associations in expressing its solidarity with the ongoing student protests happening around the world, in France, Albania, Spain, Italy, Serbia, Austria, Belgium, Portugal, Greece and India. We condemn the violent repression that most of these demonstrations are facing.
This widespread outbreak of youth uprisings is far from a coincidence: many years of ever-increasing austerity, climate change that is already manifesting itself, and the systematic push towards war economies at the expense of vital fields like education, health, housing, and social security are only a handful of reasons for the deterioration of the living conditions of millions of people, with some unfortunately being disproportionately affected. Coupled with the repeated reluctance or refusal of many governments to adequately address these issues, it is only natural that frustration is culminating in the demands the protesters are putting forth.
In this context, we are inviting representatives of local movements to share their perspectives through a range of flexible formats, including opinion articles (which may also be republished from other platforms), video messages, or interviews conducted by the IUS. Through this initiative, we hope to amplify their voices and provide a platform for their experiences and demands, thereby giving greater visibility to their struggles and helping them build connections at the international level.
